  భీష్ముడు  మాఘ  శుక్ల  అష్టమి  నాడు  తనువు  చాలించినా  వైకుంఠానికి  చేరడానికి  మూడు  రోజులు  పడుతుంది.  కావున  ఏకాదశి   నాడు  భీష్ముడు  మోక్షాన్ని  పొందాడని  ప్రసిద్ధి.  అందుకే  మాఘ  శుక్ల  ఏకాద శి  భీష్మ   ఏకాదశి   అని  అంటారు.  మాఘ  శుద్ధ  ఏకాదశి,  భీష్మ   ఏకాదశి గా  పిలుస్తారు. అందుకే ఈ రోజున భీష్మునికి ఇష్టమైన విష్ణు సహస్రనామమును ఈ ఏకాదశి నాడు ఉపవాసముతో మూడుసార్లకు తగ్గకుండా శక్తి మేరకు పారాయణము చేయాలి.  ఈ రోజు తప్పకుండా శ్రీ విష్ణు సహస్రనామాలను పఠించాలి. విష్ణు సహస్ర నామాలను పఠించలేని వారు "శ్రీ రామ రామ రామేతి రమే రామే మనోరమే | సహస్ర నామతత్తుల్యం రామనామ వరాననే" అనే ఈ శ్లోకాన్ని చదివితే విష్ణు సహస్ర నామాలు చదివినదానితో సమానమని.. పార్వతీ దేవికి పరమ శివుడు వివరించినట్లు పురాణాలు చెప్తున్నాయి. 

  రథ  సప్తమి  సూర్య  భగవానుని  జన్మదినం .  ఈ  రథ  సప్తమి  రోజునే  సూర్య  భగవానుడు  సత్రాజిత్తుకి  శమంతక  మణిని  ప్రసాదించాడు.  ఏడు  కిరణాలుగా  సప్తవర్ణాలను  ప్రతిబింబిస్తూ  కదిలే  సూర్యుని  అశ్వాలు/  కిరణాలు  ఈ  రోజు  ఒకే  తెల్లని  కాంతి  రేఖగా  మారుతాయి.  అందుకే  ఈ  రోజుని  రథసప్తమి  అంటారని  పెద్దలు  చెబుతారు. సూర్యుని  గమనం ఏడు గుర్రములు పూన్చిన బంగారు  రథం  మీద సాగుతుందని వేదము "హిరణ్యయేన సవితారథేన" అని తెలుపుతుంది. సూర్య గమనం ప్రకారం  ఉత్తరాయనము ,  దక్షిణాయనము  అని రెండు విధములు.  ఆషాఢమాసము  నుండి  పుష్యమాసము  వరకు దక్షిణాయనము. సూర్యరథం దక్షిణాయనంలో దక్షిణ దిశగా పయనిస్తుంది. తరువాత సూర్యుడు మకరరాశి ప్రవేశం ఉత్తరాయన ప్రారంభ సూచకముగా రథసప్తమి అని పేరు వచ్చింది. అందుకే ఈరోజు పవిత్రదినముగా భావించి భారతీయులు సూర్యుని ఆరాధిస్తారు.
