MANGALA SUTHRA IMPORTANCE

What is Mangalsutra? The word 'mangalsutra' is derived from the two words,  mangal  meaning holy or auspicious and  sutra meaning thread. It is a  sacred necklace  that the groom  ties around the bride's neck on the day of the wedding in a ceremony called  Mangalya dharanam (meaning - wearing the auspicious), thereby giving her the status of his wife and life mate. Thereafter, the wife wears the mangalsutra all her life or till the time the husband is alive as a sign of their marriage, mutual love and goodwill, understanding and faithful commitment to one another. When is the Mangalsutra Worn? On the wedding day, a yellow thread is prepared by using turmeric paste and is tied around the bride's neck with three knots during the marriage ceremony while the priest recites Vedic hymns and partakes in prayers. In some customs, the groom ties the first knot and his sisters tie the other two knots. Later, the mangalsutra may be restrung on some auspicious day in the fo

Hindu Marriage Significance

in a Marriage is a terribly important part of life. It's a partnership you form, a companion you choose, hopefully for the rest of your life. Someone who helps you, who supports you and vice versa. The way we view marriage and the way we approach it determines how our life could end up being.According to Hindu  Vedic marriage, both the bride and the bridegroom take oath for the practice of self-restraint, to work together for the welfare of the family and to help each other to attain spiritual peace. This lofty ideal of sanctity is a great gift of Hinduism to the world at large. Having recognized this fact,  Hindu scriptures  or the shastras  have allotted certain specific duties to Hindu women. These duties include maintaining domestic peace, adjustment of social relations and attainment of spiritual perfection. The Idea of Marriage The idea behind the institution of marriage in Hinduism is to foster, not self-interest, but love for the entire family. Practice of self-restrai

If a person be attached to physical enjoyment, he will have the fear of disease. If he be attached to his social status he will be afraid of losing it. If he be attached to his wealth he will fear the hostile enemies who may snatch it away. If he be attached to honor he will be afraid of humiliation. If he be attached to power he will fear his enemies who may render him powerless. If he be attached to his beauty he will fear his old age. If he be attached to his scholarship he will fear those who may challenge his erudition. If he be attached to his good reputation he will fear the wicked who may defame him. If he be attached to his body he will be afraid of death. All the things of the world pertaining to man are fraught with fear. Renunciation of attachment alone causes fearlessness.

In 2012, the date of Nirjala Ekadashi is May 31 and June 1. The significance of Nirjala Ekadasi is mentioned in the Mahabharata and Padma Purana. Draupadi and the Pandavas, except for Bhima, used to observe all the Ekadasis. Bhima, who was a voracious eater, could not bear hunger and used to skip the fasting. Now, Bhima wanted to observe fast and also eat!! So he enquired to Sage Vyasa to find a way out. But since eating and fasting was impossible, sage Vyasa told about Nirjala Ekadasi, which has all the benefits of observing twenty four ekadasis. Nirjala Ekadasi is one of the strictest fast in Hindu religion and among all Ekadasis. Nirjala means ‘without water.’ Staunch Vishn
