Once there lived a demon (Asura) named Balasura. He was a very generous king and was very popular with his subjects. Once he defeated Indra and other demigods (Devas) and soon he became invincible. Unable to find a way to defeat Balasura, Devas decided to perform a yajna (sacrifice). A person who appeared at the yajna advised to take advantage of Balasura’s generosity. Balasura used to never refuse people and he used to fulfill their wishes. Devas went in the guise of common people and asked his body to be offered as sacrifice as they were performing a sacrifice for the welfare of the people. Balasura readily agreed and offered his body. A legend is narrated by the కామ్బోజ రాజ వంశములో Yashovarma , a noble king who had no heir to rule his kingdom. On his special prayers to God, he was blessed with a son. The king’s vows did not end with this, as his son was terminally ill. A saint who visited the king advised that his son should perform the Ratha Saptami pooja (worship) with reverence to rid of his past sins. Once the King’s son performed this, his health was restored and he ruled his kingdom well. [ 4 ] It is also said that sage Bhisma breathed his last breath a day after the Rathasaptahmi day.

The day is also observed as వసంత పంచమి and Sri Panchami. It is believed by some Hindu community that సరస్వతి దేవి on this day. The day is also known as పుస్తకముల పూజ (book worship). Elaborate Saraswati puja is held on this day in houses, temples and in educational institutions. Yellow color dress is preferred on this day as it stands for prosperity and knowledge. Children are introduced to the world of letters on this day. Elders or pundits make youngsters write ‘ Om. ’ Educational institutions conduct special poojas and students in large numbers participate in these poojas.

Andal imagines Srivillupthur to be Gokulam, her companions as the Gopikas and Vatapatrasayee, Lord in the Srivilliputtur temple, as Lord Krishna, and sings her Thiruppavai. She wakes up her companions so that they may perform a Nomu vrata. They observed the Katyayani vrata, which is a vrata to Parvati. Their aim was to get rain. Now why would Andal, who would worship none other than Lord Narayana, worship Parvati? No Paramaikantin will worship any other devata, but Lord Narayana.
