Sudarshana Ashtakam consists of 8 slokas in praise of Sudarshana chakra. .Sudarshanachakra is weapon borne by Sriman Narayana .It is a powerful weapon which is used by Narayana to slay the enemies of His devotees.

This ashtakam viz 8 slokas  were written by Swamy Desikan .When he was residing at Kanchipuram[ in 13 th cent AD] he heard that nearly all the residents of a nearby village - .Thirupatkuzhi  were stricken by debiltating disease that  caused high fever and chill and nothing could cure it.Many lost their lives and others  were bed ridden.

Moved by their suffering he invoked Sudarshana chakra  by writing  Sudarshana Astakam and  Shoda sayudha stothram  which are in praise of Sudarshana Chakra  so that Sri Sudarshana Chakra would  come to their aid and cure them of their disease.

Elders recounting those days tell us that the residents of Thirupaatkuzhi  immediately recovered from the terrible disease and there after  were  never troubled by it .Happiness and cheer returned in their lives.

Sudharshana ashtakam is not just hymn, but it is a medium of love and devotion between the devotees and God. This hymn teaches us that through unwavering faith and devotion to God we can over come all obstacles in our lives. Recitation of this hymn gives inner peace, fearlessness and confidence to the devotees.

The meaning of the mantra goes like this, “O Lord Krishna, you protect the universe, and you control it. You are the supreme power, and you are the beloved of the gopikas. Oh Lord, protect me from every evil power. You who has the entire world in his hands. You who holds the Sudarshana Chakra and destroys every injustice, I surrender myself to you.”
